You hold the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert, or you were planning to take exam MS-102. The certification’s page now carries a notice that it is going away.

Microsoft retires the certification and exam MS-102 on 30 November 2026. In this blog post you read what happens to your certification after that, what you can do before that date, and why the new exam AB-650 is a logical next step.

Updated in October 2026: Microsoft names no successor to MS-102, so this blog post calls AB-650 a logical next step and not a successor. Added what the Defender part of AB-650 does and does not cover, the shorter renewal period for a certification that retires, and the requirement for the Microsoft 365 Copilot specialization.

What changes?

According to the page of the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert, the certification and its exam retire on 30 November 2026. After that you can no longer earn the certification, nor renew it. The MS-102 study guide names the exact moment: 11:59 PM Central Standard Time. In the Netherlands that is 6:59 AM on 1 December.

The list of exams that retire also names MS-102 with this date. Microsoft names no official successor on any of these pages. Further on you read why AB-650 is still the obvious next step.

What happens to your existing certification?

A certification that you earned or renewed before it retires simply stays on your transcript. According to the page on credential retirement, it stays in the section with active certifications until it expires. After that it moves to the historical section.

According to the expiration policy, a role-based certification, associate or expert, is valid for one year. Normally you renew it with a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. After a passed assessment, the certification runs for another year, counted from the old expiration date. That is on the page about renewal.

After 30 November that renewal is no longer possible. Microsoft recommends renewing before the retirement date if you are already eligible.

💡 You can renew during a six-month period in which you are eligible. For a certification that retires, Microsoft says that period may be shorter for some people, depending on the anniversary date of their certification; the notice with your certification on your Microsoft Learn profile takes the retirement date into account. Do not wait for an email: according to the renewal FAQ, Microsoft does not send reminders for certifications that retire. So check on your transcript now when your certification expires, and renew it before 30 November if you already can.

Do you work for a Microsoft partner? According to the list of exams that retire, certifications you earned before the retirement date still count toward the partner program requirements for one more year. For the Microsoft 365 Copilot specialization, the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert has no longer been a requirement since July 2026, according to the Partner Center announcements of July 2026.

Why AB-650 is a logical next step

The new exam AB-650: Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate. Microsoft nowhere calls it the replacement for MS-102. Still, it is a logical next step, for three reasons:

  • The timing. AB-650 is available now as a beta, while MS-102 retires on 30 November.
  • Largely the same foundation. Tenant management, identity in Entra ID, security and Purview appear in both exams.
  • Microsoft’s direction. Microsoft describes the role as managing Microsoft 365 and AI services, for what it calls an AI-powered workplace. More than a third of the exam is about Copilot and agents.

One difference to remember: AB-650 is an associate, not an expert. The comparison below shows where the exams overlap and where they differ.

MS-102 AB-650
Level Expert Associate
Tenant and workloads 25–30% 20–25%
Identity, security and compliance Entra ID 25–30%, Defender XDR 30–35%, Purview 10–15% Together 40–45%
AI services No separate section 35–40%
Status Retires on 30 November 2026 Beta

According to the study guide, the Defender part of AB-650 covers only Microsoft Defender for Office 365: alerts, threat policies, investigation of email and collaboration threats, and attack simulations. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps, which each have their own section in the MS-102 study guide, do not appear in AB-650. Microsoft does expect you to know what Defender XDR can do.

For AI services, according to the AB-650 study guide, there are four parts:

  • Enable and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • Manage agents in Microsoft 365 and Agent 365.
  • Secure and govern agents with Agent 365.
  • Monitor AI services in Microsoft 365.

Microsoft expects you to have experience with the Microsoft 365 workloads and with Microsoft Entra ID, to know what Defender XDR can do, and to know Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Taking a beta exam

AB-650 is currently a beta exam, in English only. There is no practice assessment yet. With a beta exam you do not get your score right away. It follows about ten days after the exam becomes generally available worldwide. If you pass the beta exam, it simply counts toward the certification and you do not have to take the final version.

📚 Before you register, review the AB-650 study guide and check which exam objectives apply on the date of your exam.

Wrapping up

MS-102 and the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert retire on 30 November 2026. Your existing certification stays active until it expires, but renewing is no longer possible after that date. Check your expiration date on your transcript and renew before 30 November if you already can. Microsoft names no successor on Microsoft Learn, but AB-650 is a logical next step: it is available now, covers much of the same foundation and adds the management of Copilot and agents.
